Sunshine, Farming Challenges, and Regenerative Solutions: Farmer Will's June at The Dandelion Hideaway Glamping Site

Farming has been particularly challenging this year, and the occasional June sunshine has been greatly appreciated. Our Farmer Will has been especially busy, engaging with other farmers and sharing knowledge at various events. This is all part of our ongoing effort to continually learn and improve our farming methods.

In June, Will had the opportunity to speak at Cereals, where he addressed the crucial topic of land drainage. The excessive rain we've experienced this year has underscored the importance of effective drainage systems. Poor drainage can lead to waterlogged fields, which in turn can damage crops and reduce yields. By implementing proper drainage solutions, we can protect our crops and ensure better growth conditions, ultimately leading to more robust harvests.

Will's journey this month also includes a visit to the Canterbury Farmers Club. Here, he will engage with local farmers, discussing our farming techniques and exchanging ideas. These interactions are invaluable, as they allow us to learn from the experiences of others and share our own insights, fostering a collaborative spirit within the farming community.

A highlight of the month is Will’s participation in a panel session at Groundswell, where he will join two other farmers to discuss their “regenerative farming” journey. Regenerative farming is a holistic approach that focuses on improving soil health, increasing biodiversity, and enhancing ecosystem resilience. This method goes beyond sustainable farming by actively working to restore and regenerate the land.

At The Dandelion Hideaway, we are deeply committed to regenerative farming. Our practices include the use of manure to enrich the soil with organic matter and nutrients, cover crops to protect and enhance soil structure, and livestock to naturally manage vegetation and contribute to soil fertility through their waste. These practices help sequester carbon, improve water retention, and reduce the need for synthetic fertilisers and pesticides.

Cover crops, such as vetch and rye, play a crucial role in our farming system. They prevent soil erosion, improve soil fertility, and suppress weeds, creating a healthier growing environment for our primary crops. Additionally, by rotating livestock on our fields, we mimic natural grazing patterns, which promotes diverse plant growth and soil aeration.

The recent shift in weather has been a game-changer for us at The Dandelion Hideaway . After enduring one of the wettest years on record, the challenges were immense.

Autumn sown wheat crops bore the brunt of relentless rainfall, resulting in some to be written off. Yet, amidst adversity, we found opportunity.

Preparing our glamping site in such wet conditions was no small feat, but one we tackled head-on. Despite setbacks, we're thrilled to announce significant progress.

Most of our maize has been planted, and we've ventured into new territory with the addition of sunflowers. These vibrant blooms will enhance our safari tents , promising to elevate the glamping experience for our guests .

The Olivers have been farming for four generations, although a lot has changed in that time. They have gone from using the horse and plough to tractors that can drive themselves. The technologies available are so advanced, with soil testing, satellite imagery and lots lots more. However, the principles of good farming haven’t changed hugely. Will, along with his family is utilising these principles and from that is winning multiple farming awards and speaking at several events.

At The Dandelion Hideaway , you can stay in beautiful rural surrounds within the land that Will and his Family Farm. Crops for 2024, include Winter Wheat,which goes for bread making, along with Maize which is used on local farms and local feed mills. We also have some grassland, for our animals and for our glampers. New this year, we are going to be planting Sunflowers, so our glampers can pick their own and also to help feed who we share the farm with, bees, birds and other wildlife. This all allows our guests to be able to immerse themselves in natures beauty.

We try to be as environmentally friendly as we can at The Dandelion Hideaway , whether it be having our own Bee hives on the farm, providing Owl houses or how we are trying our best to preserve natural habitats. We do not use insecticides on our farm, and haven’t done for many years. We are constantly monitoring the health of our soils, with regular soil sampling, making a better ecosystem for all.

In addition to maize, we're thrilled to introduce sunflowers to our fields. These vibrant blooms won't just provide us with valuable oil; they'll also serve as a haven for our resident bees and attract a plethora of birds, enriching the biodiversity of our surroundings. The Ultimate Staycation

What can beat a UK Summer? Birdsong, beer gardens, Al Fresco Dining. Looking at the weather today – snow, ice and rain – I cannot wait.

I have also made a mental note to book abroad for some Winter Sun next year! Who wouldn’t like a bit more money in the bank to go somewhere exotic when we really need it?

A UK ‘Stay-Cation’ can help you save those pounds and pence. Our family and pet-friendly Glamping Site in the heart of Rural England is a perfect place for ‘Back to Nature’ living…with a few home comforts thrown in!

You may be asking yourself, why Leicestershire?

Well, this central location, perfect for spending time with family and friends, is close to The National Forest. Its crystal clear lakes, adventurous cycling routes and rambling walks are also within touching distance of numerous theme parks and museums. There really is something for everyone. The leaflets in our visitors’ information hub, located in the onsite shepherd’s hut, should give our guest plenty of inspiration for days out.

However, you really don’t need to leave The Dandelion Hideaway at all! Our picturesque site, surrounded by fields and forest, has green shoots appearing in the bluebell wood heralding the start of spring and our site re-opening on March 31st.

Our site is peaceful. Relaxing spots to read a book whilst you watch the kids play in the field. Children can meet the farm animals a short walk from the main site, join Katie, a qualified teacher, in fun Easter activities and hunt Scarecrows on our trail over the Billy Goats Gruff Bridge – which finishes at the local pub…!

In preparation for your visits, we have freshened up the site, ensured our Safari tents are cosy and the Shepherds’ hut and the beach hut (full of outdoor toys) have been given a lick of paint.

We hope we have filled you with inspiration for a relaxing break, away from your busy lives, to take time to enjoy good food and good company in a stunning spot.

Wow 2023 already feels like it is flying by. It has been a very busy start to the year.

I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Oxford Farming Conference. Which hosted some inspirational speakers. Samantha Kinghorn MBE, the Double Paralympic Medallist was hugely inspiring in how she has adapted to life changing injuries. Also, getting the opportunity the personally meet HRH, The Princess Royal, Princess Anne was a memorable moment that will stay with me forever. Having the opportunity to talk to her about farming and The Dandelion Hideway was very surreal.

Upon my return, the farming excursions continued, with a trip to Hannover, with the National Farmers Union Crops Board. We visited Saatan Union, who are working at plant breeding. This is utilised by farmers all over the world to grow the best yielding and quality plants we can. This is working towards making wheat more efficient to grow for example. A hugely inspiring trip.

February started with Rorys 25th birthday, which was “celebrated” by watching England lose to Scotland. Rory and I went to visit George Sly at Horizon Agriculure in Spalding, to look at new concepts in terms of wheat and maize establishment. Some exciting concepts to look forward to trying in the future……watch this space!!!.

Meanwhile on the farm, the first dose of fertiliser has gone on to the wheat crops. A very little amount, just to ensure the crop gets away as soon as it is able to as the spring like weather greats us. Maybe a fool’s spring, but who knows!!

Spring is my favourite time of year, crops start to grow, maize is planted, the cows start calving and the glamping opens.

Ottilie cannot wait to have company for animal feeding and Pony Petting once again. Now 2, she is going to love meeting and greeting for 2023. Ottilie has been out exploring the farm, as usual, and this week she has been checking the Beans. A break crop that we grow on the farm, and the soil loves growing beans. They require very little in the way of fertiliser, as they produce their own nitrogen. Which is great for us!!!

January is always a quiet start to the year, all autumn planting is done, and cover crops are well established.

The cover crops provide our maize ground (which will be planted in the spring) with ground cover to reduce erosion and help protect our soils, whilst also adding and locking up nutrients at the same time. The roots also help improve the drainage of our soils.

These cover crops are being grazed by neighbouring sheep farmers, which also helps benefit our soils. So it is a win win for all. Ottilie loves seeing the sheep out in the fields and often shouts BAA at them when we are passing. She normally spots them before I do!!! Winter wheat crops are up and away in most parts, and will be waiting for some warm weather to start growing again. The heavy frosts have really help dry out the fields after a wet end to 2022.

Ottilie turned 2 this month, and we can’t believe where the time has gone. She loves the farm and getting out and about what we the weather. We will use the blog to keep your all updated with what is going on on the farm. If there is anything in particular you’d like to see. Please let us know.

The Dandelion Hideaway at Osbaston House Farm, Leicestershire, central England.

“If you like the idea of living deep in nature but with cosy home comforts, head to The Dandelion Hideaway. Available from April to October, these six 3-bedroom ‘canvas cottage lodges’ are set on the edge of woodland within the farm’s acres of peaceful countryside. Each cottage has a bathroom with a roll-top bath, a big dining table, a fridge and a wood-burning stove. Guests can collect fresh eggs from the hens at any time, join farmer John to milk the goats, groom the Shetland ponies, and spot badgers in the badger’s hide. There is also a new indoor children’s den play area and The Old Cow Shed shop sells sausages, bacon, eggs and goat’s cheese. Guests can request one of owner Sharon’s homemade stews and eat under the stars by the warmth of a campfire.”

Getting there: The farm is a 25-minute drive or one hour bus ride from Nuneaton station, which is a 75 minute train journey from London St Pancras International.

Places to visit nearby: Spot deer in sprawling Bradgate Park, a 20 minute drive away, or visit magnificent country mansion Belvoir Castle, a one hour drive away.

VisitEngland, the national tourist board has announced the finalists for the Awards for Excellence 2017 with The Dandelion Hideaway named as a finalist.

The winners of this prestigious accolade will be announced at the Awards ceremony on Monday 24 April at the Hilton Waldorf, London.

Working collaboratively with industry, VisitEngland’s Awards for Excellence celebrate the best in English tourism.

The Dandelion Hideaway announced as a finalist, represents one of the three finalists in the Glamping category in England.

VisitEngland Chief Executive Sally Balcombe said: “The Awards shine a spotlight on an industry driven by the highest-calibre people and organisations who deliver unforgettable experiences for visitors, raising the profile of England as a world-class destination and driving the economic benefits of tourism across the regions.”

“Awards for Excellence finalists exemplify outstanding tourism talent and distinguished businesses throughout England. We received over 600 truly impressive applications this year and there’s absolutely no doubt that the finalists represent the very best in the industry. VisitEngland, the national tourist board awards the Dandelion Hideaway Gold!

In response to the changing face of the glamping industry, VisitEngland, has launched a new glamping accreditation scheme. The criteria for Visit England’s glamping scheme introduces a Gold award for those who offer exceptionally high quality facilities and services. We are delighted to receive the VisitEngland Glamping Gold Award, as one of the pioneers of the glamping sector it’s gratifying to have been recognised.

We are the only glamping destination to have won the VisitEngland Excellence Award in the Self-Catering Accommodation category in 2014, 2015, 2016. And in 2015 we were awarded the distinguished VisitEngland ROSE (Recognition of Service Excellence), presented to just 100 businesses in England.

The Dandelion Hideaway wins again at the regional Leicester and Leicestershire tourism awards.

The Dandelion Hideaway wins again at the regional Leicester and Leicestershire tourism awards. This is the fifth year running that The Dandelion Hideaway has achieved success at the Leicester and Leicestershire Excellence in Tourism Awards 2015.

Gold winners and highly commended finalists received their awards at the ceremony on November 5 hosted by Leicester Shire Promotions and held at Mercure Leicester, The Grand Hotel.

Martin Peters, chief executive of Leicester Shire Promotions said: “This year’s finalists highly commended and gold award winners showcase the strength of Leicester and Leicestershire’s offering as a nationally-recognise destination for domestic and international visitors.

“We are proud of all of these local businesses, organisations and experiences, and will be supporting them as they aim for national glory in the VisitEngland awards.”

The Dandelion That Became A Rose

The Dandelion Hideaway has been awarded a VisitEngland ROSE award in Recognition Of Service Excellence.

This brand new award from VisitEngland is only given to 100 properties each year that are deemed to go the extra mile to provide excellent customer service.

The Dandelion Hideaway launched in 2011 and set out to offer the very best Glamping experience. Accommodation is in six secluded safari style canvas cottages with vintage chic interiors, roll top baths, wood burning stoves and even a wood burning hot tub. Guests are encouraged to get hands on with a range of complimentary farm activities. There is an honesty shop, where guests can buy local produce, and Sharon will prepare a home cooked stew to be waiting in the wood burning stove.

Sharon Earp commented, “We are thrilled to be the only Glamping accommodation to get this exclusive recognition from VisitEngland. John and I love seeing the pleasure guests get from staying on the farm and we are always delighted that so many return each season.”

The Dandelion Hideaway is also the first Glamping enterprise to be awarded a coveted VisitEngland Award (2015, 2014), as well as receiving the Leicestershire Tourism Self-Catering Award for four years in a row (2014, 2013, 2012, 2011). In addition, The Dandelion Hideaway was shortlisted by The Family Traveller Magazine in the best self-catering category in October 2015.

The Rose award process involves an annual VisitEngland quality assessment with observations, plus other evidence, including assessing online customer reviews. The final judging panel also looked for innovation that set the business apart, such as facilities or services to make the customer’s stay really special.
